DAKOTA DAYLE BRIGHTSTAR WILLIAMSON
Hanover County
Dakota will be attending The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill this fall with career aspirations of becoming a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.
Dakota graduated from Patrick Henry High School where she was a member of the National Art Honor Society. Active in school activities, she served as President of both the Spanish Club and the National Art Honor Society during her senior year. Learning the meaning of responsibility on a school bus, Dakota says “I grew up on the school bus that my mom drove and helped her to sweep the bus”. Dakota also remembers reminding other students of important bus rules for insuring a safe ride to and from school.

JOSHUA CHARLES SAUNDERS
Franklin County
Joshua has been accepted into Longwood University where he plans to major in Criminal Justice.
A graduate of Franklin County High School where he is known as “a personable, self-confident and charming young man”, Joshua was an active member of the Future Business Leaders of America and International Club in high school. A varsity letterman in soccer, Joshua has turned his passion for the sport into helping others by coaching and referring community soccer games. He is serious about his community service work – having volunteered in a soup kitchen and serving on two separate mission trips.

ALISON G. RIFE
Buchanan County
Alison will be attending Pikeville College in Pikeville, Kentucky this fall with a goal of becoming an attorney.
Alison graduated from Twin Valley High School in Pilgrims Knob which, according to Alison, “is one of the smallest towns in Southwest Virginia.” Active in the Beta Club, 4-H Club, and Future Business Leaders of America, she also performed in school plays and variety shows and was voted Homecoming Queen. Interested in athletics, Alison played volleyball and tennis and ran track. Spending her free time scrapbooking old family photos as a way of preserving her family history, Allison considers herself “a very strong competitor in any field of endeavor with a good head on her shoulders”.

Virginia Association for Pupil Transportation’s 2009 CLYDE W. MORRIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT:
JESSICA LEE SHENK – from Shenandoah County
Jessica will be attending the University of Virginia this fall with career aspirations of becoming a Pediatrician.
Jessica graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in Shenandoah County and was ranked 2nd in her graduating class. She was active in her school’s Student Council Association and was a Class Officer in her sophomore, junior and senior year. Among many co-curricular activities, she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Future Educators Association and the Future Business Leaders of America. Active in sports, Jessica lettered in volleyball, basketball and soccer. She participated in several community service projects while in high school while balancing several part-time jobs.

Southeastern States Pupil Transportation Conference 2009 BUSTER BYNUM SCHOLARSHIP VIRGINIA RECIPIENTS:
JONATHAN MICHAEL MARSHALL – from Scott County
Jonathan has been accepted into the General Engineering program at Virginia Tech this fall.
Maintaining perfect attendance while attending Twin Springs High School in Scott County, Jonathan distinguished himself with the highest class average in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. A member of the National Honor Society, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America – attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and gaining membership in the Order of the Arrow (the Boy Scout honorary society). Jonathan was a member of the Varsity Golf and Track and Field Teams while in high school and spends quality time with both his father and mother as all three serve the local community volunteering with the Rescue Squad.
CHAD LEE RAINES – from Montgomery County
Chad will be attending Virginia Tech this fall with plans to study aerospace engineering.
An outstanding student at Eastern Montgomery High School, Chad was active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Educators of America, Beta Club, and Boys State. Chad also participated in the regional area Governors School, traveling almost an hour by school bus every morning to begin classes by 7 am. He successfully juggled his challenging academic schedule with sports – football, baseball, basketball and track – and found time to work a part-time job to save money for his college education. He enjoys farming with his dad and hopes to have a small farm of his own one day.

Standing before the attendees at the banquet of the annual Pupil Transportation Conference held this year in the Virginia Beach Conference and Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Linwood Horne (Hanover County), VAPT Scholarship Chairperson, quoted a line from the essay of the winning 2008 Clyde W. Morris Scholarship entry as he introduced the winner of this year’s scholarship, Brittany Marilyn Tucker.
Ms. Tucker, an 18 year old recent graduate of Tabb High School in Yorktown, VA, together with her parents, Brenda (a veteran school bus driver with York County) and Keith Tucker, were guests of the VAPT at this year’s Conference banquet.
While attending Tabb High School, Ms. Tucker was a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Spanish Honors Society. She was also a member of the school volleyball team.
Developing a special interest in foreign mission projects through her local church, Ms. Tucker has participated in mission work to such places as Romania and Mexico where she developed a deep appreciation of different cultures and a desire to pursue a study in foreign affairs in college.
Attending James Madison University this fall, Ms. Tucker plans to major in International Studies. “I will put 100% of my (VAPT scholarship) money towards purchasing books and paying for tuition” states Ms. Tucker.
For 2008, The VAPT Board of Directors approved raising the amount of the Clyde W. Morris Scholarship to $2,500.
Mr. Horne also announced the Virginia winners of the Southeastern States Pupil Transportation Conference’s Buster Bynum Scholarship. Named in honor of R.A. “Buster” Bynum, retired Director of the Virginia Department of Education’s pupil transportation office and current SESPTC treasurer, Virginia is one of fourteen participating states where two $1,000 scholarships are made available to deserving students with a family tie to public school transportation.
The two 2008 Virginia recipients of the Buster Bynum Scholarship include DANIEL NORMAN HUSE and ELIZABETH ALLISON NICELY.
Mr. Huse is a recent graduate of James Madison High School in Vienna, VA and plans to attend the University of Delaware this fall. Mr. Huse’s mother, Elizabeth, is employed by Fairfax County Public Schools.
A recent graduate of Alleghany High School in Covington, VA, Ms. Nicely plans to attend Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge this fall. Ms. Nicely’s mother, Pamela, is employed by Alleghany County Public Schools.
According to June F. Eanes, Director of Support Services for the Virginia Department of Education, the $1,000 Bynum scholarship checks were mailed to transportation personnel in both Fairfax and Alleghany counties to be awarded to Mr. Huse and Ms. Nicely respectively.

Megan Moretti - Chantilly HS - Junior (Father William Holland is a school bus driver for Fairfax County Public Schools)
Cara Weatherford - Tunstall HS - Freshman (Grandmother is a retired school bus driver for Pittsylvania County)
Brooke Wright - Powhatan HS - Junior (Grandmother is a retired school bus driver for Powhatan County Public Schools).
