Virginia Association for Pupil Transportation

A school bus driver has been arrested after five students were killed and dozens were injured in a single-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon November 21, 2016 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher said in a press briefing that the school bus, which was transporting 37 elementary students, left the roadway and struck a tree. He said that the bus was the only vehicle involved in the crash, which occurred in clear and dry conditions. The bus driver has been charged and many are facing sadness and loss at a time when we usually express thankfulness.

We remember and pray for the families of the children on this bus, the bus driver who has been charged, our fellow transporters in Tennessee feeling the impacts of this event, and our own transportation team here at home facing questions about the work we do each day. Despite this horrific event, please remember that the yellow school bus …driven by a professional driver… remains the safest way to travel to and from school. Many students might not get to school if not for your efforts. Please keep focused on being safe and being proud of your important contribution to the education of our children.

We give thanks for each of you who does their best each day to transport and keep our kids safe. Enjoy your holiday and remember the good work you do so well
